1. Your research proposal is research you are “planning” to conduct which means your proposal is your anticipated plan of how you will conduct your study. Therefore, first you start with a title/topic about something that you are interested in which you all have submitted and have been approved. Think about something that may not have been researched or something that has been researched that you plan to change. It CAN NOT be something that has already been done that you simply copy. 2. You have all submitted a hypothesis and have also received a grade. So that you wouldn’t be confused, this is why I suggested that your title and hypothesis assignments be related in topic. Remember a hypothesis is an educated guess about the outcome of your research. 3. You have your title and hypothesis now you need a research problem (what are you planning to investigate or gather data about)? This is the start of your proposal. Review Chapters 1 and 2 which discuss what research is. Chapters 3 and 4 continue and goes into conducting a literature review. Chapters 5 and 13 discusses writing your research proposal. Please review these PowerPoint presentations and use as a reference to guide you as you develop your proposal. 4. EXAMPLE Research Proposal Shell: TITLE – Perceptions Among African American (AA) Women in Mississippi About Their Weight Status RESEARCH QUESTION – What are the perceptions, attitudes and beliefs among AA women in Mississippi related to the Body Mass Index (BMI) Chart? INTRODUCTION: Include background about African American Women and Weight (i.e. obesity statistics in MS particularly among women) What does the data show about this in MS, nationally, globally? LITERATURE REVIEW: What previous studies (research) [i.e. published journal articles] have been conducted or concluded about this topic? Is there a lot of information or limited information about this topic. There is no limit on how many journal articles or your literature review section however, you need to have enough information to write a comprehensive proposal that includes all categories. METHODS: Who is my population how will they be selected to participate in the study. My research design is a mixed method study. I will use surveys and focus groups to conduct my information. In this section you will include a description of your method, why you plan to use this method, why this is the best method etc. Utilize what the book states about the various study designs (i.e. pros and cons) ETHICAL CONSIDERATION: I will ensure that participants understand their participation in the study. I will obtain consent by…….etc. Why is participants and obtaining consent important? EXPECTED RESULTS: My study found that AA women did not agree with the BMI chart. They felt that the chart was specific to other women li.e. Asian, White women). They felt the chart did not take into account their figures. Etc. This is where your hypothesis comes into play. Did your study results support or not support your hypothesis? You do not have to state your hypothesis, I just wanted to give you something to think about as how the parts go together. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY: This study is important because there is limited information related to obtaining perceptions of African American women who are disproportionately overweight compared to other women of racial and ethnic groups. The study will provide information regarding their views about how to best educate women to ensure a healthy weight to prevent chronic diseases as a result of being overweight/ obese. Study may result in a change or development of a BMI chart that is specific to AA women and their figures etc. REFERENCES 5. What is trickv is that vou are “blanning” to conduct a study without actually conducting the study. Instead of outcomes based on data you collected (you WILL NOT collect data) you will present your “expected results”. 6. Links as resources regarding APA formatting, writing a proposal with examples. If you have 1-2 pages for each category that’s your paper. PLEASE do not overthink this. YOU ALL GOT THIS!
