POSITIVE PUNISHMENT: A CASE STUDY
Suppose you are responsible for developing a plan to modify behavior. You have applied a number of more conventional interventions, but none of your attempts has been successful. Under what circumstances would you consider more controversial methods?
Presentation punishment, also known as positive punishment, involves presenting an aversive stimulus after a behavior has occurred. The objective is to apply a negative outcome in response to an undesirable outcome. The hope is that the experience of the outcome will cause the individual to avoid the behavior in the future. There are various types of presentation punishment, some more controversial than others.
For this Assignment, you will review a case study in which a controversial form of presentation punishment is considered. You will analyze the circumstances of the case study and ethical issues presented by the use of presentation punishment. You will also explain and defend your position on the matter.
Review the readings, weekly video introduction, and the required media found in this week’s Learning Resources to gain an understanding of punishment by stimulus presentation. Note: It will be critical for you to also take the time to review all the required media programs for this week prior to completing this Discussion.
Consider the following case study:
A child with autism is engaging in self-injurious behaviors (e.g., head banging). A number of interventions have been attempted that do not involve punishment, but none has been successful. You think that the use of a presentation punishment (e.g., electric shock) may be effective.
Review the BACB® Ethics for Behavior Analysts and the Learning Resources for this week to support your findings for this Assignment.
Search the internet and/or the Walden Library for two or three articles and/or position papers related to using punishment by stimulus presentation as an effective practice.
Assignment (1–2 pages):

Explain whether you believe presentation punishment is appropriate for the case of the child with autism.
Use your BACB® Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts to support your findings within your explanation.
In your explanation, include citations to at least two articles to support your findings.
Be sure to support your Assignment with specific references to behavior-analytic theory and research.
