An observation and analysis of one New York City neighborhood is an important component of this course. While you are observing the neighborhood, you will take some notes. You should take written notes on: the cleanliness of the environments, the amount of and types of different types of establishments (churches, cafes, convenience stores, fast food restaurants, fine dining, grocery stores, cafes, bars, gyms, or health centers, recreational areas like parks, libraries, etc.), the presence or absence of police, the name/number of schools in the neighborhoods, the quality of the apartment buildings, and noisiness and disruption. Also take notes on any feelings or emotions you have while observing the neighborhoods. Take notes on features of the environments that might impact how individuals develop (cognitively, physically, emotionally, socially, etc.) in those environments.
– Length of Write-Up: 3 to 5 double-spaced pages (900-1500 words).- Not more
– Proper APA referencing is required when citing the textbook and/or external sources.
Guidelines:
1. Introduction (10 points): Begin your paper with a concise overview of the selected neighborhood, including its name and location. Lay the foundation for the concepts you’ll explore in your analysis.
2. Observation Summary (10 points): Write a succinct paragraph summarizing your observations within the neighborhood. Highlight the places visited, observed sights, and any notable sounds that caught your attention.
3. Application of Concepts/Theories (40 points – 10 points each): Apply four distinct course concepts or theories to your neighborhood observations. Explain each concept’s relevance and illustrate its manifestation in the neighborhood through specific examples.
4. Unobservable Aspects (10 points): Discuss aspects beyond your observation scope and how understanding them could enhance your comprehension of developmental influences.
5. Reflective Insights (10 points): Reflect on your emotions and relate them to at least two concepts explored earlier. Explain how the neighborhood’s features evoked these feelings and their implications.
6. Self-Reflection and Conclusion (10 points): Integrate a paragraph reflecting on what you felt about at least two aspects of the experience and conclude your paper by summarizing your main insights and observations, emphasizing the value of analyzing neighborhoods from a child psychology perspective.
7. Writing Clarity and Organization (10 points): Ensure your paper is well-structured, with clear and concise writing. Use appropriate transitions to guide the reader through your analysis, reflection, and conclusion. (Be sure to address grammar, punctuation, and capitalization)
*You may include photos at the end of the document to illustrate your observation. -doesn’t count as part of your page count. It would just be to elaborate on your writing and experience.
