Assignment Overview:
Students will select six (6) children’s literature material (books, teaching aids) about
Children and their Disability and determine how each of these books impact children and families attending early childhood programs.
Purpose
The purpose is to develop an understanding of Book selection for Dialogic Reading. Students will be exposed to how literacy is used to develop a child’s love of reading and language development. In addition, students will become familiar with resource materials for parents, staff and children to learn about differing types of abilities in the early childhood program setting.
Instructions:
Following review of the six books about Children and their Disability, complete a written review using the Guidelines below and College writing standards. The information in the written review must include each information listed in items 1-8 below. Each paper must be typed.
1. Bibliographic information (author, title, publisher, copyright date, number of pages and ISBN number)
2. Reading level (infants, toddlers, pre-school, or school-age)
3. Plot synopsis (<100 words) 4. Critical Review (How does it support the standards for early literacy and anti-bias? What is your favorite part of the book and why? Would children and adults enjoy the book, why or why not?) 5. For each book, write two open ended questions for children during circle time 6. Why would you recommend the book? Why not? 7. Is this an award-winning book (example Caldecott winner, or best book for children)? 8. Include a title page with your full name, course name/section, instructor and date Book Review Presentation As part of the "In Class Activity" each student will present their Book Review Paper which will include a viewable format of each book and highlights of the summary of the books. The presentation will be limited to 15 minutes. The Presentation is worth 15 points. Written Book Review Paper The written Book Review Paper assignment must be submitted in Canvas according to the deadline posted. The Book Review Paper is worth a total of 60 points.
