You will be transcribing a senecio in which you will be having a conversation with a child who’s age should be child (18 months – 4 years old, English-speaking but bilingual is ok too) and you will need to acquire 50 utterances from this child I was thinking if the conversation can be about the child’s day at school or anything to do with school related talk.
An ‘utterance’ can be thought of as an expression of a complete thought. It could be a complete sentence, a phrase/incomplete sentence, or a one-word response to a question.
Why do I need separate line numbers for each utterance?
To code your child’s speech sample accurately, you will need to have every utterance listed separately with its own line number. If line numbers contain more than one utterance, any future coding would not be accurate, so it is critical to get accurate line numbers for each utterance.
How do I number the utterances correctly?
Please review the following handout to clarify your understanding of utterances and how to number them. Look closely at the examples, as these are a good visual representation for how you will translate your child’s speech sample into a written transcription.
