Children Mental Health
Our children are a very important part of us, and it is our duty as parents, teachers, and
the community at large to protect them and ensure that they lead a healthy and productive life.
Special care is necessary, especially for children with mental health disorders. Mental health
disorders pose several challenges such as disruption of life in our home, at school, and in the
community. It is our responsibility to help these children get the medical attention they deserve
so that they can grow to become well-adjusted members of the community. Diagnosis of mental
disorders is done by qualified professionals using the standard Diagnostic and Statistical Manual
of Mental Disorders (DSM) which assists all patients in getting a diagnosis and treatment for
mental health problems. If our children at home exhibit any form of developmental disorder or
behaviors, it is advisable to take the child to get a DSM test and provide necessary medical and
emotional support to the child.
Mental health disorders in children are grouped into two distinct groups; Developmental
disorders and Social and emotional disorders. Our children may have social and emotional
disorders that we may need to detect if we do not have close attachment and observation of our
children’s behaviors. Some of these social and emotional behaviors include social phobias,
anxiety, Post post-traumatic stress Syndrome, depression, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
For instance, a child with a phobia may show anxiety, or distress through crying, freezing, or
climbing to the parents when they feel extreme and irrational fear towards something. We have
to observe the behavior exhibited by our children and how they make them feel or behave to
provide them with emotional and medical support if needed. Children with separation anxiety
issues may display extreme fear when parents are away while those with social anxiety may
show extreme distress with going to school. Those who show general anxiety exhibit fear of the
future and the chances of bad things happening. Sometimes our children may feel depressed and
rebellious from going to school, feel unloved, or show signs of hopelessness. parents should
ensure that these children have access to medication and psychotherapy treatment to avoid
further damage. Other children may display symptoms of developmental disorders such as
Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), and Pervasive
Development Disorder(PDD). It is our responsibility as parents and the whole community at
large to take note of any behavioral disorder that may indicate a mental health disorder. By
providing medical and emotional help we shall save our children from issues such as family
discord, drug abuse, violence, and extreme issues such as suicide.
