bibliography)
This is your final step of a semester-long writing journey! You will have written a research proposal, explored methodologies and research strategies, conducted research, written an annotated bibliography, written a first draft, and received feedback from your peers and professor. Now it’s time to finish the capstone project!
The project, which we will be discussing and preparing for all semester, is an opportunity to enhance your research and writing skills. It will give you the opportunity to develop your scholarly interests and evolve as an independent thinker. You may use this sustained, scholarly project that you might use to showcase your skills to prospective employers or graduate schools.
The project’s topic is up to you, though you are asked to choose a topic where you can utilize knowledge and skills acquired in your cognate areas. Many students develop capstone projects from ideas sparked in the classes they’ve taken; others fashion their topics on the basis of longstanding personal passions.
I encourage you, if possible, to focus on a complex real-world issue or problem. We will discuss how to choose and shape a topic for your research question and proposal.
You are required to conduct substantial research for this project. For your annotated bibliography you will be asked to share, summarize, and evaluate eight sources. Your final project should cite a minimum of eight sources, though they do not need to be the same eight that were in your annotated bibliography. I expect that most of you will include even more sources. While research into what others have said and done is the essential first step, your capstone project should go beyond prior work to include your own insights and critical thinking.
The following are my expectations for all capstone projects:
An attention-grabbing title. Consider using a title and subtitle.
An introduction that draws readers into your paper.
A clearly articulated thesis statement, which is the central argument of your project. Your introduction should also explain your cognates or disciplinary perspectives used in this investigation and how they are relevant in your investigation.
Clear organization. Since this is a long paper, you will likely want to divide it into separate sections, each with its own title. Include clear transitions so readers can follow your argument.
Evidence drawn from research, which must include scholarly booksLinks to an external site. and peer reviewed academic journal articlesLinks to an external site., but may also include works written for broader audiences, as well as other forms of research such as surveys, interviews, observations, and experiments. You may choose to embed images, charts, graphs, and other forms of visual evidence, but they must be appropriately citedLinks to an external site..
A conclusion where you come back to your overall argument about how to best address this issue/problem. You should also reflect on how your cognate or disciplinary perspectives affected your investigation.
Citations and a bibliography (not annotated) in the appropriate documentation style for the discipline.
Excellent grammar, spelling, and punctuation. You will want to proofread the essay multiple times (don’t rely solely on spell check!).
