Directions:
Choose any artwork or image from prehistoric through contemporary Africa, Oceania, or Native North America to discuss critically.
This can be any visual object, traditional or untraditional, across all media.
Media may include architecture, artwork, painting, sculpture, masks, textiles, photographs, jewelry, fashion, graffiti, public art, advertisements, daily objects, or utilitarian art.
You can choose any artwork whether or not it is on one of our study guides.
If you choose an image we have discussed, provide more depth, consideration, and research.
Focus on one image and no more than two in order to go into more depth.
You may choose an artwork in a local museum, but this is not mandatory.
Include your sources and a Works Cited section.
Cite with in-text citations and direct quotes.
include a Works Cited page at the end.
What your paper should include:
At least four pages of text with direct quotes from your research.
A Works Cited page (see the following page for information about this).
An Image Page at the end of your paper with identifying information (For example: Artist unknown, Head Hacha, ca. 400-800 CE, stone, Mexico.  Artwork from Metropolitan Museum of Art site.)
Formal analysis description in your paper with at least three vocabulary terms from the Week 1, Part 2 module.
A thesis statement in your introduction that takes a point of view and shows critical thought instead of offering a direct summary.
An introduction, body paragraphs (the number of paragraphs vary per paper), and conclusion.
Possible considerations: Please note that you do not have to discuss all of these points, but can consider any points below that might be relevant to your paper.
Formal concerns.  This may include line, color, pattern, volume, balance, or other considerations from W1, Part 2.
Media and Technique.  Is the medium of this work sculpture, painting, or architecture? Do you find something relevant about the technique with which this work was created?
Function.  Does this art have a functional purpose or a more symbolic function, such as communicating a narrative?
Cultural Association.  Is this art associated with the Moai peoples or the Navajo Nation for example?
Artistic Movement or style.  Is this piece connected to a movement such as Modern art?  Can we associate this with the Sudano-Sahelian style?
Content and Symbolism.  What is the subject of this work? Can we understand it further through its use of symbols?
Context.  What are the social, political, or spiritual factors influencing this work?
This may offer insight into why a work was created and takes the visual form that it has.
Consider how this art reflects the philosophical beliefs of a culture through its visual ideals.
Optional Theoretical Approaches – Do you see this work through a theoretical perspective such as post-colonial theory?
Research and Sources
Your paper should include at least five research sources with direct quotes from this research to strengthen your perspective.
As a general suggestion, I would try to include at least one direct quote or reference to your research in every body paragraph between your introduction and conclusion.  I also recommend analyzing or describing how this quote or research inclusion relates to your paper.  I take a holistic approach to grading each paper on its overall effectiveness (rather than counting each quote), but find that this general guideline for including at least one direct citation per body paragraph tends to contribute to a stronger paper.
In addition to materials you may find at your library, you may consider using additional books, essays, art journals, or museum catalogues.  I would aim to find sources that are connected to academic institutions or museums if possible.
Here are some possible links to websites that may be helpful sources or guide you to additional resources for your paper:

Citing
Include images with the artwork information.
Include your sources and a Works Cited section.
Cite with in-text citations and include a works cited section at the end. Citing can include an in-text citation with no quotes if you are paraphrasing or quotes and an in-text citation if you are directly quoting one ore more citations. Here’s how to cite a website in MLA: http://columbiacollege-ca.libguides.com/mla/websites
Formatting Your Final publish
Your research paper should be at least 4 pages, double-spaced and typed in a 12-point font. Include numbered pages. I recommend choosing a title for your paper.
A cover page is not necessary. You should include a copy of your image as one of the last pages before your Works Cited page.
