Assignment Directions:
Click on Case Resources to access the individual cases. Applicable cases are located in Case Resources under NU Resources. Read the individual cases and answer each questions according to the court case results. There may be multiple questions for each case. Answers must comply with the case law for full credit.
Each assignment must include:
Week number, student name, typed question and question numbers. The Assignment Template includes this information. Assignments must be completed by using the Assignment Template for each week and uploaded for submission. Each assignment should be double-spaced with 12-point font. There is a required minimum word count of 200 words for each assignment question. Word count includes the answer only. The question will not be included in the word count. Grading will be based on a combination of the use of the template and word count. The purpose of the word count is to assure that proper effort is given to the Assignments.
No credit will be given for incorrect answers and for not using the template. There will be no credit for assignments turned in after the deadline of each week.

Courts overwhelmingly hold that amnesia of criminal acts brought on by drugs or alcohol does not render a defendant mentally incompetent to stand trial. Why is that? When could amnesia result in a determination of incompetence? See Gonzales v. State, 313 S.W.3d 840 (Tex. App. 2010), cert. denied 131 S. Ct. 921 (2011).
Defendant and another person extorted money from a former married lover of the defendant by threatening to disclose the previous sexual relationship to the victim’s wife. At her trial, defendant asked for an instruction on the defense of duress, claiming the other person threatened to kill her if she didn’t cooperate in the extortion scheme, which lasted several months. The trial judge refused to give the instruction. Why not? Was the judge correct? See United States v. Nwoye, 663 F.3d 460 (C.A.D.C. 2011).

This means you complete all work in a word processing document (e.g., Microsoft Word). The template is a Microsoft Word doc. Only work submitted in document form will be graded. Nothing typed in the textbox will be graded. This assignment is worth 10 points.
