Once you have read your articles, answer the questions below. PLEASE USE YOUR OWN WORDS (I.E., PARAPHRASE) WHEN ANSWERING THESE QUESTIONS. Paraphrasing what the author said is one way you demonstrate that you understand what you have read. Remember that a paraphrase involves MORE than just changing a few words in a direct quote; it requires you to put what you’re read into YOUR OWN WORDS.You do not need a formal introduction or conclusion. Instead, clearly number your response to each question and write those responses in paragraph form. Be sure that the article citation is at the top of the page.
Questions: In order to summarize your article you should answer the following questions for each article. Answering these questions should help you gain an understanding of your articles. This information will also be used in your final paper (although it will require you to organize and edit so that the information flows smoothly and logically).
1. Purpose/Rationale: Why did the researcher(s) conduct this study? What did the researcher(s) say they wanted to learn or discover? Why, according to the authors, was this an important study to conduct (why is it important or useful, according to the researcher(s))? Do you agree with the researcher that the study seems important or useful?
2. Theoretical Framing: Briefly summarize, how the researcher(s) explain the theory (is the study applying the theory as a whole or just particular parts or constructs of the theory? How does the researcher(s) describe the theory? Is that description similar to or different from how the textbook describes/explains it? How is the theory used in the study?
3. Research Methods: Summarize the research methods in your own words. (Was it a survey, interview, focus groups? How many people were in the study? Who were the people in the study? Anything else that seems important to share?)
4. Findings/Results: What were the most important and significant results or findings from the research? What did the author(s) find that seemed especially important? Be sure to look at the discussion section when answering this. The discussion often talks about the research study’s important findings and how they relate to human experience and enhance our understanding.
5. Critique: What did you think of the study? Explain your answer. How did this research study enhance your understanding of the theory? Were there any new aspects to the theory that were uncovered in this research? What are your thoughts about the theory based on how it was used in this study?
