Identify important nursing considerations for medications used in treating clients who have type 1
diabetes mellitus.
Communicate effectively and therapeutically with a client who has a new diagnosis of type 1
diabetes mellitus and his family.
Complete an accurate and effective SBAR communication.
Educate the client and family about the disease process, lifestyle changes, diet, exercise,
medications, treatments, school needs.
Scenario Overview: The type 1 diabetes mellitus scenario focuses on a 12-year-old male who presents to his
provider’s office with manifestations of diabetes mellitus, his care and educational needs during diagnosis
and hospitalization, and his follow- up appointment to evaluate the outcomes of his treatment and plan of
care.
Tasks:
1. Complete Active Learning Templates:
Growth and Development: School-age/early adolescence, care for the hospitalized child
Medication: Insulin: Types, administration, modes of delivery including insulin pens and insulin
pumps
Nursing Skill: Fingerstick procedure for monitoring blood glucose
System Disorder: Type 1 diabetes mellitus, hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia
2. Debrief:
Reflect on an “Aha” moment that you experienced during the simulation.
Describe the clinical situation and provides the details on what you learned that lead to the
expansion of your clinical knowledge.
