Topic: Many historians attribute three key events that occurred in the mid-1950’s that triggered the Civil Rights Movement. This included the 1954 US Supreme Court “Brown vs. Topeka BOE” decision, the 1955/56 Montgomery Bus Boycott, and the 1955 Emmett Till Murder trial. Did these movements define the Civil Rights movement, or were there other events or a longer history that led to a mass movement that we today identify as the Civil Rights era? Explain and defend either premise, i.e., the longer movement or the one that began in the 1950s.
Essay should be based on your understanding of the material we have covered in this class – I would prefer that you do not use information from internet sources. Make sure all quoted material (no more than two lines per quote; no more than two direct quotations) is enclosed in quotation marks (not commas); and do not put a space between the quotation marks and the first or last words of the quotation. Remember, I am not impressed by how well you can research this topic on the internet – in fact, I will not grade any essay that is comprised of extensive material quoted from Wikipedia or any other internet source.
