Research Essay Guidelines: 1) Research Question. A research question has to be clearly articulated and the relevance of the question has to be demonstrated with careful contextualization and significance of the problem under study. 2) Hypothesis: A tentative short statement making a claim with regard to your research findings. A hypothesis can help verify an assumption or debunk an assumption based on research. 3) Analytical Frame: What kind of analytical frame/lens is being deployed to study the problem? How is this analytical approach developed by scholars? What kind of analytical insights can you cultivate by developing this approach to the problem? 4) Debate among scholars: What is the existing debate among scholars and practitioners with regard to the problem that you are exploring? How has this literature helped you to verify the strengths and weaknesses of the existing literature. It should not be a simple reproduction of the previous lit review exercises. It should be an effort to articulate how the existing lit has helped you to think about approaching the problem, developing an analytical frame and cultivated an understanding of key concepts. 5) Key Arguments: The paper should state clearly what are the key arguments you are trying to make in your paper. Each argument should be explained clearly at length with the help of examples. Each argument should be articulated in separate paragraphs and these should be organized in a manner demonstrating logical consistency with forward and backward linkages without repetition. The body of the paper should be devoted to identifying and developing each of these arguments clearly in your paper. The arguments should provide coherent contextualization and develop each issue area very carefully and in a logical and systematic manner. This is the most important part of your research paper. 6) Conclusion: A short statement sharing your reflections on the topic of your research and its potential for further exploration.
