Mental illnesses are one the most common health conditions in the United States. According to the Center for Disease Control Prevention more than 1 in 5 US adults live with a mental illness. Over 1 in 5 youth (ages 13-18) either currently or at some point during their life, have had a seriously debilitating mental illness. (National Institute of Mental Health 2015) About 1 in 25 U.S adults lives with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression. (National Institute of Mental Health 2015).
The poor and disadvantage populations, are mostly effected by mental health. Not able to receive proper healthcare can also effect a person mental health, along with unemployment and limited education.
Former President Donald Trump, discuss mental health with a plan to confront the homelessness in the United States, suggesting that institutionalizing some patients with mental illness could solve the crisis. (Waddick, 2023). President Biden has announced new rules to push insurance companies to increase their coverage of mental health treatments. (Waddick, 2023).
Being in the healthcare field, I feel that the government should speak to healthcare workers that have first hand with taking care of mental health patients and asking the health care workers what do you see that we don’t see? What population do you see the most in mental heath facilities? Adults, geriatrics, or children. What are some of the complaints that bring them in the facilities? If they get these answers to these questions maybe the government can get a better understanding and comes up with better plans
Discussion 2- respond to this post below by asking questions to help clarify the scenario and application of data, or offering additional/alternative ideas for the application of nursing informatics principles. 150-200 words, APA format. 2 references and 3 intext citation
Health informatics is closely connected to the growth and improvement of the healthcare system as well as patient care outcomes (Sweeney, 2017). All medical providers need to rely on data that is obtained through systems such as electronic health records as well as patient reported outcome surveys in order to analyze current care methods. One scenario in which this is important is in the review of patients that have received a total hip arthroplasty (THA). Data could be collected based on patient reported outcomes and the use of electronic health records to determine patient satisfaction and to query the rate of repeated medical visits for THA-related issues. This data could be assessed to identify common areas of patient complaint along with possible connections to unanticipated THA medical appointments. The data may reveal an issue with the actual implant, its alignment, or even surgical error. “However, patients are mainly satisfied if their pain is relieved, their function is restored, their quality of life has improved and they can participate in daily activities” (Pronk, et al., 2023). This knowledge of areas of concern can be obtained from the collected data and used to investigate issues and potential solutions to improve the quality of patient care. Nurse leaders can use clinical reasoning and judgment to observe and report any trends or concerns that they observe while providing patient care as well. Many facilities are even working on staff initiatives that will serve to help “facilitate clinical research opportunities and bridge the gap between clinical care and research” (Shepherd, et al., 2022). The goal is to include all nurse leaders as well as other medical staff in the improvement of patient care and outcomes surrounding THA through utilizing observation, electronic health record data, and patient reports.
