You are a social entrepreneur designing an intervention to make an impact on a social problem.
1. Choose a social problem that is meaningful to you. Describe the social problem briefly.
2. Describe what approach to public benefit you would take. Select from one or more of the approaches that were presented in class: utilitarianism; Rawls’ theory of justice; the capabilities approach; communitarianism; feminism and/or intersectionality.
3. Precisely explain the philosophy of public benefit as it applies to your chosen social problem. What objectives and processes would it imply? What are the advantages and disadvantages (if any)? Why have you selected this moral approach?
4. Reflect on your choice. Do you / have you consistently used this approach in your work and individual moral decisions? Would you use this approach for all social problems?
Task Guidelines
– This is an applied task – it seeks to identify how you would apply your learning about values / public benefit to a real-world situation.
– Do not write too much on sections 1 and 2 – around 200 words for each section would normally be enough. Show clearly that you understand the key principles of the chosen philosophy in section 2.
– Make sure that the argument in section 3 is not simply theoretical but refers to the advantages and disadvantages for the specific social field that you have chosen.
– Leave enough space to give a sufficient answer to section 4.
