HR Ethical Dilemma
As an HR team member at C3PO, you’ve been extremely frustrated with the lack of qualified candidates for several positions over the last year, which has resulted in the warehouses being short-staffed in several positions. You’ve had an especially hard time filling a second shift team leader position in the Maitland location. Two days ago, you interviewed Brianna for this position. Brianna is only marginally qualified for the position, having some frontline warehouse experience, but managerial experience only in a retail setting, not in a warehouse. Still, she met the minimum qualifications for the position, displayed decent social skills and a willingness to learn in the interview, and was available to start immediately. Yesterday, you sent Brianna an offer letter via email with instructions to let you know if she accepts the offer within five days.
This morning, an HR colleague forwarded you a resume and team leader application for another candidate, Josh, who looked great on paper, so you immediately called him. You were completely impressed with his responses during the phone call but learned that he is available only for second shift. He has great team leader experience in a warehouse just like C3PO’s, has outstanding recommendations, and could hit the ground running, requiring only minimal onboarding and no training to get started. You are absolutely positive that Josh would require less training, would do a better job than Brianna, would be a good fit with C3PO’s work culture and, in general, be a better asset to the warehouse team and the organization. You are considering rescinding the offer to Brianna and instead offering the job to Josh.
