Give a scheme + mechanism for at least two products you believe are possible (one major + one minor).
Completely annotate your 1H NMR and include a table that has all assignments. Write about your NMR analysis in 1-2 paragraphs and explain which of the two competing products you have.
TITLE (centered)
Name and Date (centered)
ABSTRACT (150 word maximum)
The abstract includes a brief statement of the experiment objectives, the methods used, and the principle results of your work.
INTRODUCTION
A brief introduction is included that covers what experiment was performed, the experiment objectives, and any relevant background information necessary to understand the experiment or the importance of the compounds used.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Data — All data collected will be included in the results and discussion section in the order they were obtained. Students must interpret their results and the implications they have on the experiment. Include significant Rf values, percent yield and anything else you deem significant.
Spectral Analysis – Discussion and assignment of major IR bands and how changes in spectra identify chemical transformations, and an analysis of NMR splitting, J value relationships, integrations, and what the signals represent in terms of the chemical structure. Peak assignments and analysis will be located in the results and discussion, annotated spectra will be in the appendices.
Techniques – An integrated discussion of what techniques were used, how and why they work. Theory, relevant results, and analysis must be presented. This should include TLC, reflux, liquid-liquid extraction, and rotary evaporation.
CONCLUSION
A restatement of the experiment goals, brief discussion of yields, a recap of the results stated in terms of experiment successes or failures, any implications for future research based on these results, and possible improvements that may be made. If a part or all of the experiment did not work, try to address why.
EXPERIMENTAL
Appropriately details exactly what was done in the laboratory using concise terms and brief statements. This section must include data that exactly matches the notebook. If you did not write a step in your notebook, you did not do it and cannot record it here. All relevant procedural information is included, all recorded data is included, but not every detail must be present. In this section, yields should be reported as masses, molar quantities, and percent yield.
NOTEBOOK
Notebook is appropriately maintained. All numbers used in report reflect those in notebook. Carbon copies of relevant pages are to be stapled together and turned in to the TA at the end of the last lab discussed in the report.
APPENDICES AND REFERENCES
Annotated spectra are included in the appendices with appropriate figure numbers and titles beneath the figure. Sample calculations performed are labeled and submitted as appendices. Any references used are cited using ACS standards.
GRAMMAR
Proper spelling, punctuation, capitalization, sentence structure and grammar are used throughout the report.
STRUCTURE
Report is properly organized; sections are distinct and spectra are embedded neatly. Use Times New Roman 12 for the body and use Arial Bold 12 for section headings. Single space the entire paper with a blank line between paragraphs. Use proper notation in reporting any numbers, units, figures, or schemes.
I’ll be attaching the NMR and IR files after today.
