Data Analysis Project: Interpretation Report
For this exercise, you will conduct a basic analysis of crime victimization information as reported by participants in the National Crime Victimization Survey. This survey includes information about crime reported to police and not reported to police, if they used any type of assistance (medical or victim services), if they incurred an injury, etc. You will be asked to discuss basic information about these victimizations, presented in an Excel spreadsheet.
Step 1: Looking at Spreadsheet 1 – the Raw Number and Rates Table for the Personal Victimization variables listed – robbery, aggravated assault and simple assault. What pattern do you see in terms of increasing or decreasing over the last 10 years? Which crime is reported more? Do they all follow the same pattern? (are they all increasing and decreasing in the same years?)
Step 2: Looking at Spreadsheet 2 – Which group of victims reports their crimes more to the police, overall (men and women together)? Between men and women, who is more likely to report robbery? Aggravated assault? Simple assault? You can use the percentage part of the spreadsheet for this item. Does that match who is most likely to be harmed by that particular crime?
Step 3: Looking at Spreadsheet 3 – Which group of victims was more likely to be injured? (Percentages provided). Does it appear that incurring an injury increased, decreased or didn’t affect the likelihood of reporting the crime to police?
Step 4: Looking at Spreadsheet 4 – Does presence of a weapon influence whether the crimes listed are reported to the police? Are the patterns the same for each of the crimes (meaning, does presence of a weapon seem to influence reporting patterns for all three crimes listed)?
Conclusion: Looking at spreadsheets 2-4, what would your recommendations be to the Mayor of a city in terms of how to increase reporting rates and help victims to recover from the crimes by which they are victimized?
