After your citation information for your first source according to MLA formatting, your
first annotation starts. Your annotation should be 2 paragraphs long. You should start with a
summary that covers the main point of the source and any points that are relevant to the
argument of your research paper. You should not quote from the source because quotations are
more appropriate for the actual research paper. Instead, you should paraphrase the source,
meaning that you should put the information you learned from the source into your own words.
Also, do not copy and paste from the source or from the source’s abstract because this is
plagiarism and will result in you receiving a grade penalty and up to outright receiving a 0 on
this assignment. (Yes, this has happened.)
After your summary, you will include an evaluation of the source. This evaluation should
be very brief, only 1-2 sentences. In the evaluation, you should point out the strengths and the
weaknesses of the source. What does the source cover? What does it not cover? Which part of
the source influenced your way of thinking about the topic you are writing? Lastly, you should
discuss how you plan to use the source in your paper. This also only needs to be 1-2 sentences
and should tell me (your audience) how you plan to use this source in your research paper. For
example, “I plan to use this source in my paper as background information in my introduction,
because it will give my audience the necessary information that they should know to understand

my topic.” You should NOT copy and paste this example into your annotated bibliography.
Once again, that would be plagiarism.

After your first annotation is complete, you will include the citation information for your
next source and begin the annotation of that source directly underneath the citation. This pattern
should continue for all your sources. The finished annotated bibliography will be several pages.
The exact length will depend on you and the number of sources you use. (Remember, you must
use at least 4 (four) sources for this assignment. You do not have to be overly in-depth with
every source, but this is a college class. Your paragraphs should reflect that
