Discussion 5
After reading the Cameron essay on “What language barrier” and Tannen’s essay “Sex, Lies and Conversation” watching the video that accompanies the New York Times article “Who sounds gay” (read the article too please) and watching Tannen’s short video clip “Can We Talk,” reflect on the following:

Can We Talk – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-LTUBDMXLE
To what extent do you believe there are specific gender-related communication styles? Are women and/or gay/transgender individuals disadvantaged socially and professionally by certain speech patterns? Do men and women really talk differently?
Your own detailed, response, with examples, is due by Thursday night and an equally detailed peer to peer response is due by Sunday night. Late posts, posts lacking in detail, and/or missing posts result in a 50 percent reduction.
COM 233 Grading Rubric – Discussions
Students who get a 100 on the Discussions will have displayed the following
1. Thorough engagement with the textbook content
2. Responded to all of the “prompts” in each discussion (many prompts have several parts)
3. Provided sufficient detail and examples to reveal an “excellent” level of critical thinking in regards to the course content addressed by the prompts and questions.
An 85 indicates a “good” effort at all of the above, but some detail may be missing to thoroughly reveal the student’s level of critical thinking.
A 75 indicates an average effort at all of the above, meaning more detail and examples were required to completely show the student’s level of engagement and critical thinking.
A 59 indicates an incomplete response and/or one lacking in sufficient detail and examples to show the student has engaged with the actual course content.
Discussion 6
How would you characterize your communication style?
To what extent do you think communication style is cultural as opposed to personal (i.e. related to personality type)? Does everyone in your family or circle of friends have the same communication style? Would you want to be able to use a different communication style from what you normally use? How effective is your communication style in intercultural communication?
Your own detailed, response, with examples, is due by Thursday night and an equally detailed peer to peer response is due by Sunday night. Late posts, posts lacking in detail, and/or missing posts result in a 50 percent reduction.
