Weather Journal
***Just make these predictions up in your head and then take the actual real predictions from one week in Mt. Pleasant in the last month.******** compare your prediction to the observed weather and evaluate your forecast.
***You’ll fill out the attached excel spreadsheet included for your weather data. In a separate document, record any additional observations, your forecast, and your evaluation of the forecast for each day. An example of such an entry might look something like this: *** Make sure to fill it out on the spreadsheet use the formatting she gives you***
“Day 1 – 3/14/15
Additional observations: Winds were calm in the morning, but increased as the day went on, shifting direction from south winds around noon to northwest winds around dinner. Temperature dropped from 58 degrees to 40 degrees through the afternoon.
Forecast: Based on the fact that temperature dropped quite a lot over the course of the afternoon today, I would expect the temperatures to be colder tomorrow. The shifting direction of winds would also suggest the passage of a front, so there may be a chance of precipitation overnight.
Forecast high: 42 F
Forecast low: 30 F
Forecast Precipitation: light snow overnight, with little to no accumulation, melting by mid-afternoon
Forecast Evaluation:
High temperature was only 38F rather than the 42F I predicted. It stayed cloudy all day so not much heating from the sun
Low temperature was 30F! I predicted it exactly!
Precipitation: No snow occurred – I guess there wasn’t enough moisture to generate precipitationI would recommend completing the weather journal assignment towards the second half of the course so that you have some more tools available to you.
Data observations can be collected however you see fit, but I would encourage you to take a few moments to go out and experience the weather each day (safely though!)
Web sources that you may find helpful include:
The National Weather Service
The University of Utah Mesowest website
Mt. Pleasant’s data
Grading of this assignment will be based on detail and completeness, not accuracy, so don’t worry if you get a few forecasts wrong! Even the pros get things wrong. Remember you’re predicting the future, and that’s hard to do!

Homework 9: The homework should be straightforward. Please answer everything on the given worksheets.
