We must understand the factors that cause fragility, violence, and conflict in order to develop solutions that will meaningfully reduce instability at its roots rather than merely addressing the symptoms.
—Peter Maurer, President
International Committee of the Red Cross
As a nation, we spy on other nations for signs of instability in order to identify potential threats to our national security. But what if, instead of spying on other nations to identify threats, we invested our energy in understanding the factors that create that instability in the first place? As a nation, is it our responsibility to try and fix these problems before they even start, or should we sit back and allow other nations to operate autonomously, and step in only if their instability presents a threat to our security?
Take a position. Do you agree or disagree that identifying the factors that cause instability in other nations should be our national priority, or should we focus on simply monitoring other nations only for those factors that pose a threat to our nation?
First, title your initial post either “The U.S. should focus on understanding the factors that cause instability in other nations” or “The U.S. should continue to monitor nations for instability and only step in if there appears to be a threat to our security.”
Then, using the information gained in this module, make your case. How might understanding the factors that cause instability create greater national security? If we shifted our focus to understanding these factors, what might be some of the risks? Do you see any issues with shifting the focus to finding solutions to the instability? What do you see as our role in helping to create stability in other nations?
