This is the assignment link for you to submit the final draft of Paper 2, which should follow the directions for assignment format (including internal citations, using the quotation sandwich method, which we will discuss) and be 5-6 pages in length.
Here is your topic for Paper 2:
Drawing on your reading and our class discussion of Toni Morrison’s “Recitatif” and at least TWO of the assigned writers who comment on the story’s treatment of race–as well as on your Essay 2–build an argument about the role of discussions of race (or gender, or class, or culture, or other markers of identity) in college. You will use the readings for this unit and your own exploration of “Recitatif” in your Essay 2 as the groundwork for your paper, but once you set up the paper’s frame, using specific details and arguments from the readings, you will consider the question of the importance of talking about race/gender/class/other markers of identity in college more broadly. For example, you might choose to focus on the role of awareness in particular classes (e.g., history , literature, psychology, political science, or art classes; classes in STEM fields; classes in nursing or health sciences). Or you might wish to focus on the role of awareness in college spaces or activities (e.g., dorms, sports teams, clubs).
It will be important for you to CONNECT your analysis of “Recitatif” and the role of race, class, and gender in that story TO your claim about what the story teaches you about the value of seeing race/gender/class/other markers of identity and the decision to discuss or not to discuss these markers of identity in college settings. Draw from the arguments of your chosen writers on the story to help you to explain what you think is the most valuable lesson about race we learn from “Recitatif” and then apply that lesson to your consideration of how, whether, and why to have discussions about race, etc. in college.
You will use direct quotations and paraphrases from “Recitatif” and a minimum of two additional writers on the story that have been assigned to you and discussed in class. You should NOT do additional outside research for your paper–there is no need to do so. We will be talking about and practicing responsible use of source language and ideas, using the quotation sandwich method. Your paper will be reviewed by TurnItIn, which will allow you and me to check your incorporation of source material, so that I can mentor you further in responsible use, if necessary.
