This course has explored histories of racism and racial formation over the last 500 years on this continent through histories of oppression and resistance, as well as by learning key theories and concepts of Ethnic Studies. Choose an issue or topic in our contemporary society that is an example of institutional racism – one of the four I’s of oppression we’ve studied. You may consider topics from the list provided or choose an issue independently. If you are not sure if your example is fitting, consult with the professor. Research and analyze issues of power and dynamics of racial formation. Are there historical precursors to this topic that might inform our understanding of this issue and how racism works (consult the syllabus, readings and lessons from this semester). Employ at least 3 keywords, theories and concepts from the course (see our Keywords and Concepts handout). Finally, explain how this issue or event is defining race in our present era; in other words how is this a process of racial formation (as Omi and Winant explain)? How do you see the issue/event being possibly resolved?
