This assignment has two case studies. In answering the questions for both cases, please do so on one document. In both cases students are directed to work the case one part at a time and answer all the questions prior to moving on to the next step. Some questions require extensive library/internet sources research; some could be answered from the clues provided in the text and knowledge of the course material. Please be sure to clearly identify Part 1 and then Part 2.
Part I: A Case Study in Genetics. You Are Not the Mother of Your Children. This case is based on a true story of a woman whose children were almost taken from her because her DNA profile indicated she was not their biological mother. The interrupted case study follows the woman, her lawyer, and a research biologist as they try to determine why her DNA profile does not match her children’s profiles. Students are directed to work the case one part at a time and answer all the questions prior to moving on to the next step. Some questions require extensive library/internet sources research; some could be answered from the clues provided in the text and knowledge of the course material. (25 points)
Part II: A Case Study in Paternity. Two Peas in a Pod or A Case of Questionable Twins. The case study is based on a true story of a family that after in vitro fertilization realized that one of their twin sons had completely foreign DNA. The evidence supplied in this case requires that students be able to read and interpret the results of single locus DNA electrophoresis gels, or autoradiograms (provided)
