Now that you have analyzed a provided piece of fan art, I want you to find (and share the link/image) an example of participatory culture online. This can be in the form of a TikTok, a fanfiction, an online live tweet thread, an AI generated piece of fan content, or something else. Considering our discussions in the last half of the semester about media ownership, convergence culture, and participatory culture, I want you to compose an essay that answers the following sub-questions:
Who do you believe has “ownership” over these types of media content? The fans who consume and pay for it or the corporations that produce/own the original content? Justify your belief with reasoning.
What platform did your example come from and how does platform fetishism play a part in participatory and convergence cultures?
How are the Internet and social media blurring our understanding of “ownership” of media content between media producers and consumers?
How do micro-celebrities and influencers impact these forms of cultural production? And how do you think online participatory culture and convergence culture relate to our earlier conversations about labor vs work?
Be sure to use Jenkins terms (textual poachers, Scriptural economy, or fascination/frustration) in your response.
Be sure to:
Utilize at least 2 course readings from the modules (not the provided links in the question!)
3 course terms from the modules
Meet the required lengths of 5-6 paragraphs
Bold your use of course terms
Cite your sources
