For this assignment, you will complete a review of academic literature on your research topic. The review should reflect your critical reading of the literature, analyzing: (a) the theories applied in the research on the topic; (b) the methodologies used in the studies; (c) the main conclusions of the research, and disagreements among authors.
Finally, you will (d) want to explain what the research you reviewed does not tell us – identify “gaps” in the knowledge that should be filled by future research. Are there variables that may be important in explaining the phenomenon, that have not yet been included in the research? Is there a particular method that has not been applied in the research, that may shed fresh insight into the issue? These are just a couple of examples of how to approach this part of the assignment
.The assignment should contain an introduction section. Here, you will describe the social importance of the topic you will focus on. Why should we care about this issue? Provide facts that establish the topic’s importance. In this section, you should also summarize the goal of the assignment (this is your ‘thesis’ statement).
The body of the paper should critically review the research articles you discovered on your topic. The discussion of the research should be thematic. In other words, do not just summarize each article, one by one, without drawing connections between them. Instead, identify, compare and contrast the similarities and differences in the arguments, theories and methodologies before you begin writing. Then, organize the paragraphs according to each theme/idea. More than one source should be discussed in each paragraph.
Do not forget to include a conclusion paragraph. This is where you should address another key objective of the assignment: explain what the research you reviewed does not tell us, and identify some “gap” in the knowledge that should be “filled” by future research.
There are two ways of approaching a literature review; you can either take each article one at a time, and discuss the variables, methods, findings, and conclusions, kind of like in a list. OR, you can take each of the themes you saw when you were analyzing the articles and write about it theme by theme, discussing the strengths and shortcomings of each article and how they approach each theme.
