convictions. You may include a discussion of the choices faced by the protagonists of the three essays we have read by Langston Hughes “salvation”, George Orwell “shooting an elephant”, Annie Dillard “living like a weasel” and the poem by Robert Frost “the road not taken”. As you remember, 13-year old Langston Hughes was pressured by the members of his church congregation to be “saved,” the young police officer George Orwell, was pushed by the inhabitants of the town to shoot an elephant, Annie Dillard discussed the choice of living by necessity and Robert Frost wrote about choosing one’s life work in his poem “The Road not Taken.” Describe the situations of the authors, their reactions, their decisions and the outcomes of their decisions. Then, give your opinion about whether their decisions were right or wrong and why they were right or wrong. You may also describe a moral dilemma you have faced when it was a matter of following your conscience or submitting to what a group, a crowd or a person wanted you to do. How did you resolve the dilemma and what were the consequences of your decision?
