Assignment 8: Methods, Results, and SAS Code
In this assignment, you will be writing the methods and results section of a scientific manuscript
using the results you obtained from your data analyses. Use the following outline (based on
STROBE guidelines) to format your writing. Include your annotated and clean SAS codes as an
appendix to your file.
METHODS
Paragraph 1: Description of study design and setting
● Reference published NHANES papers for examples
Paragraph 2: Description of participants and study size
● Give eligibility criteria, explain how sample size of analytic sample was arrived at
Paragraph 3: Measurement of exposure variable
● Discuss how exposure was measured in the NHANES study and any modifications you
made to the raw data (e.g. computing new variables, categorizing existing variable)
Paragraph 4: Measurement of outcome variable
● Discuss how outcome was measured in the NHANES study and any modifications you
made to the raw data (e.g. computing new variables, categorizing existing variable)
Paragraph 5: Statistical methods
● Written with enough detail that a peer could replicate your tables
● Statistical methods used to describe the study sample
● Statistical methods used to assess the association between your exposure and outcome
TABLES AND FIGURES
Provide the final version of tables 1 and 2, and a figure (if relevant)
RESULTS
Paragraph 1: Descriptive data
● Give characteristics of study participants in the full sample and stratified by levels of the
exposure
Paragraph 2: Exposure data
●Provide summary statistics for your exposure variable
Paragraph 3: Outcome data
● Provide summary statistics for your outcome variable
Paragraph 4: Main results
● Give unadjusted estimates and their precision (eg 95% confidence interval).
● Give results from statistical test used to assess association
SAS CODE
Attach your clean and annotated SAS code to your submission
● SAS code must run without errors
● SAS code must be annotated
