HRM Case Study Assignment
Case name: Frostburg Fit
Basics: Students will work individually to complete the case study exam. The case study exam is worth 15% of your overall grade. You are expected to be verbose in your responses.
Instructions:
Review the Frostburg Fit case, parts A, B, and C attached below.
Provide an executive summary of the case.
Write a thorough and detailed analysis of the following case questions. Please write your response from the perspective of an HR consultant.
Scenario A
How would you determine (ex: what resources would you examine, what steps would you take, what is your final determination) Laura’s position classification (exempt vs. non-exempt)? If exempt, why? If non-exempt, should Laura be paid for hours she worked in the past? Explain.
If Laura continues to work beyond 40 hours per week, what options does Tracey have besides paying Laura overtime? Explain.
Scenario B
What are the main challenge(s) faced by Frostburg Fit in the employee conduct and discipline area?
Recommend a detailed course of action regarding the verbal threat from Ken Richards. Substantiate your recommendation with concepts from the course, state or federal law, and other professional resources.
Scenario C
How should Kevin respond to Wayne after the interaction in Wayne’s office? Explain.
Should a policy be developed regarding outside employment? Why or why not.
Recommendations
What actions should Frostburg Fit focus on first? Make an appropriate recommendation for policy and practice changes, including a proposed implementation timeline (what must they do immediately, within 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, etc.).
What resistance should the management team and board be prepared to face? Explain.
Are there any legal, ethical, or social factors the organization must consider? Explain.
Requirements:
You will number each response as it appears above. Your writing must be professional, and current MLA formatting is required for any citations. However, students may use footnotes or in-text citations. A reference list is required and must be in current MLA format.
Responses and recommendations must be clearly supported by HR best practices, current law, or standard policy. Please include a title page, reference list, and any applicable appendices.

Grading Criteria
25% – demonstrates an understanding of the case situation and its potential impact on the organization’s strategic plans and/or overall mission. Students must be able to explain why the case is important and how the organization may be affected.
25% – demonstrated ability to incorporate existing legal and policy constraints into an analysis of the case. Students must be able to explain how these laws and policies are relevant to organizational decision-making and how they can affect the interests and treatment of a diverse set of employees. In this case, diversity may be defined as any relevant differences between employees and may or may not include ethics/racial, socio-economic, family status, gender, seniority, or role/assignments within the organization.
25% – demonstrated ability to develop creative and well-explained recommendations in resolving the challenges of the case assignment. Students must be able to explain how they think a solution should be structured/developed, what likely outcomes should be expected from their recommendations, and what challenges their recommendations may present to the organization or its employees.
10% – demonstrates academic rigor as evidenced by the use of professional writing, appropriate spelling, grammar, and formatting.
15% – The presentation demonstrates a strong understanding of the case study. The presentation is clear, professional, and well-designed.
