You have been tasked with writing an essay on one of the hate crime topics covered in this module so far. You can choose from the following topics:
Disablist hate crime
Racist hate crime
Homophobic hate crime
Subcultures and hate crime
Your essay title will be ‘Why is *chosen topic* important?’.
Your essay should outline what hate crime and discrimination is, what your chosen topic means and how it relates to hate crime. You should include a relevant case study in which you explain how this links to current criminological theories. You should include at least one theory. You should also discuss the media’s reaction. Relevant case studies could be:
Disablist hate crime – the death of Fiona Pilkington
Racist hate crime – the murder of Stephen Lawrence
Homophobic hate crime – Tommy Barwick’s attack
Subcultures and hate crime – the murder of Sophie Lancaster
You can also choose your own case study if you would like. You may run this past the module leader prior to writing your essay.
Instructions:
Your assessment has a maximum word limit of 1,500 words. Do not exceed the word limit in relation to your answer by more than 10%. Your word count must appear at the end of your work.
Presentation:
For written aspects of assessment, the assignment itself must be submitted as a Word document in Arial font size 11 and in double line spacing.
Referencing:
All your assignments should be properly referenced using the Harvard Referencing System.
