The two main goals of the assignment are:
to summarize evidence showing that the chosen RReWi causes people to be more resilient
to make the RReWi a healthy NEW healthy habit that will continue to build your resilience long after the course is over.
5-7 pages, double-spaced, standard font & margins (NOT including Title Page & References page)This is approximately 1,200 to 2,000 words of writing

Make sure to only choose one
Which RReWi did you choose & why? (5 pts; approx. half a page)You may choose your favorite RReWi or one that you found especially challenging. Or, you may choose a RReWi that was not on the syllabus, but you wish we had covered— it’s up to you as long as there’s evidence that it improves resilience. (Remember, there are lots of bogus or unsupported claims out there about things that supposedly promote wellness.) Choose something that has been tested using an experimental research design.
The RReWi you choose should be something that you do not already practice regularly.
Be specific about the RReWi you will practice. For example, there are many different types of meditation (e.g., mindfulness, loving-kindness, body scan etc.) so try to choose a specific type of meditation for your final project rather than just “meditating.”
What is the evidence showing your RReWi may actually cause resilience? (20 pts; approx. 3-4 pages)Your job is to summarize research that shows a CAUSAL relationship between the RReWi activity and resilience. That means that you must try to find experimental evidence; if you are unable to find experimental studies related to your RReWi, then explain that in your paper. You may use correlational studies, but you must identify it as a correlational study and tell us what that means in terms of causal evidence. Does it really “prove” that the RReWi “works” to improve resilience?
A minimum of 3 sources are required and they may be scientific articles published in scholarly journals and/or internet media sources such as news sites, magazines, expert blogs, etc. You may choose a combination of scholarly and media sources as long as:They describe research–preferably experimental research showing casual associations.
They are published within the past 10 years (past 5 years for media articles)
If using media articles, you must conduct a CRAAP Test evaluation to make sureyou are using a trustworthy source. You will find information about how to use theCRAAP Test on Blackboard.
The articles you choose CANNOT be an article already posted by Dr. K-C on thecourse Blackboard, but it CAN be an article you cited previously in a Discussion Board assignment.
The best student papers will include a specific definition of resilience that applies to your RReWi challenge and defines “good adjustment” in a way that relates to your RReWi. For example, it might not make sense to claim that meditating for 10 minutes per day will strengthen leg muscles. However, it could make sense to claim that meditation improves emotion regulation or reduces blood pressure, and this could be a form of “resilience” defined in your paper.
Explain how you practiced your RReWi to make it a healthy habit (10 pts; approx. 2 pages)What schedule did you set for yourself to practice your RReWi over the 2-3 weeks? Tell us the frequency and duration, and anything else about how you actually planned to practice your RReWi.
What strategies did you use to remember and keep doing your RReWi consistently over 3 weeks? Did you try the WOOP method? Did you apply the concept of “friction”? That is, did you REMOVE sources of friction to make it easier for you to practice the RReWi? Did you ADD sources of friction to make it harder for you to engage in less healthy behaviors that prevent you from practicing the RReWi? If so, tell us how you did it and how it went.
You may also apply principles of operant conditioning & reinforcement schedules (discussed by Dr. Veronica Kang in Module 10). Tell us how that went and try to be specific.
Social commitment is another strategy for motivating positive behavior change. Did you socially commit to the RReWi by telling someone about your plan to change your behavior? Did you invite a friend, family member, or classmate to do the RReWi with you or ask someone close to you to keep you accountable? Using social media for this purpose is okay, but please don’t rely only on social media.
The best student papers will provide connections to course concepts and specific descriptions of behavioral strategies that were covered in class.
The best student papers will also provide a daily/weekly “log” of your activity, similar to the Google forms we have been using for RReWi’s this semester. Design your own and submit as an Appendix in your paper (not included in total page-count).
Now, reflect on how well you ACTUALLY did your RReWi. It’s okay to be honest here – your grade does not depend on your being “perfect” because we recognize that changing behavior can be hard. What’s important is to develop insight into your own strengths and barriers, and to keep trying!
Part 4: Summary & Self-reflection (10 pts; approx. 1 page)How did your resilience change over the final 2-3 weeks? How was the Final RReWi experience for you?
How did your research inform your own effort to develop this RReWi into a habit? Connect what you read to your own behaviors, feelings, and motivations about this RReWi.
What might you do in the future to keep strengthening your resilience? What advice would you give someone who wanted to try this RReWi?
Final self-reflection on the course and your learning (1 full paragraph): What do you consider to be the most important lessons about the Science & Practice of Resilience you are taking away from PSCH 271, and why?
The best student papers will make a clear distinction between the Science & Practice. The Science relates to the course concepts and research presented in class about
3. resilience broadly, not just about RReWis. The Practice relates to your RReWi activity for this final assignment and throughout the semester.Format & Style: 5 ptsProper spelling, grammar, punctuation
