Social Media; beneficial or consumptive
Social Media is a new digital platform that has created a second world for societies today. The social media platforms could be described as a digital civilization because of it’s allowance to gather humans of all occupations, ages, and interests, to publicize their lifestyles. As well as allowing individuals to exchange ideas and information in a free manner. Today, many have strong opinions on the impact of social media. Some describe it as mentally and emotionally draining while others believe it has enhanced our futures. While both opinions are true to their own extent. Social Media’s impact is based on each individual’s way of using it.
Amedie suggested that those who exclusively use social media will be mentally impacted. “Social media causes depression anxiety is from the stress produced from constantly trying to project an unrealistic and unachievable perception of perfection within your social network.” (Amedie 9) While Amedie’s claims are supported by realist statistics and public experiences, The individuals who are not mentally impacted by trying to achieve perfection status have well structured principles and realist ideals that create a barrier between the perception of perfection displayed on social media and the realistic world. Therefore, a consumptive impact on a specific individual comes from psychological background.
Hopke and Hostess examined the beneficial outcome of social media. Where they discuss the importance of social media being used as a platform to discuss topics such as climate change. Hopke and Hestres (this issue) analyze the visual framing of climate solutions by various stakeholders on Twitter.” (Hemsley) As agreed by those who have used social media to widen their knowledge, social media has a beneficial impact on those who chose to use it as such, Overall, Social Media is a digital world like the physical world, differing in the fact that one world is visual in 3d while the other is 2d. Humans have the option to benefit from social media or be consumed by it.
