Thank You For Smoking Reaction Paper Assignment
Persuasion is an integral part of many jobs and careers in our country and across the globe. However, as Frymier and Nadler (2013) point out in your textbook, just because something can be used effectively to persuade, does not mean that it should be used in persuasion. In 2005, a film was released, based on the 1994 novel Thank You for Smoking by Christopher Buckley. This film follows the fictional character Nick, the chief spokesperson for the Academy of Tobacco Studies, a firm that promotes the benefits of cigarettes. You will need to watch this 92-minute film and write a reaction paper based on what you see in this video.
1. Watch the film “Thank You for Smoking”
2. Write a 3-4 page reaction to this documentary using what you have learned about ethics and persuasion. You must discuss at least 3 course concepts related to ethics, applying them to what you saw in the video. These may include, but are not limited to Johannesen’s ethical perspectives, teleological vs. deontological approaches to ethics, the role of emotional appeals in ethical persuasion, and the role of the speaker/source in ethical persuasion.
3. In this paper, make sure that you are discussing these course concepts in enough depth, and connecting them to the video with enough clarity, that you are demonstrating mastery of the concepts that you are discussing. Make sure that you are incorporating specific examples from the video in order to illustrate the connections that you are making.
4. You will be graded on two areas: (1) application of course concepts, and (2) writing and organization. Please see the attached grading rubric for details about what you will be assessed on for this assignment.
Keep in mind, ethics are not black and white; I will not be grading you based on whether or not I agree with your ethical perspective, but solely on the accuracy and clarity of your demonstrated understanding and application of these course concepts.
