Students will complete a 1500 word essay (between 5-6 complete pages) that uses at least three sources from Composition for Commodores. Students may use additional sources but are not required to do so. The essay will not, simply, summarize the three articles, but rather, will explore a particular topic that will be developed with material from three articles. Criteria for grading include (but are not limited to) thesis construction, organization of the body paragraphs, concluding statements, MLA citations, as well as overall clarity and construction. Students are encouraged to develop a topic and thesis that interests them.
To complete the analysis and synthesis essay assignment, students will need to do the following:
1. Read: Nikole Hannah-Jones, “School Segregation, the Continuing Tragedy of Ferguson”Links to an external site.
2. Write in response to this prompt from the book:
Compose a Synthesis Essay in which you bring this article into conversation with Nick Hanauer (“Education Isn’t Enough”Links to an external site.), Jonathan Kozol (“Overcoming Apartheid”Links to an external site.), and/or Sean F. Reardon, Jane Waldfogel, and Daphna Bassok (“The Good News about Educational Inequality”Links to an external site.). All of these writers are writing about the impacts of inequality in America’s education system. Your essay should summarize and draw connections between Hannah-Jones and one or more of these sources, and you should use them to support your own argument about this topic.
