One of the last things we’re doing this semester is presenting our research to one another. This lab will help you prepare for that presentation.
Requirements
First, read through the requirements for the presentation on the Research Prep – Presentation assignment page.
Spend 15 minutes brainstorming on what sort of presentation you want to give and what details you want to focus on. Record those brainstorming notes in a word document, then start working on the presentation. After another 45 minutes, submit the work you’ve accomplished here. You may need to finish preparing after completing this short assignment; it’s purpose is to get you started.
In many fields, presenting findings and research is often an important and final part of the research process. From industry conferences to corporate presentations, you will often be called upon to present your work, verbally, to others. We’re going to dip our toes into this process here by preparing the notes and structure of a presentation.
Requirements
You will need to create a presentation that demonstrates a best effort to explain both the research you did and argument you will take in your 4th essay. This presentation should fill about 10 minutes. The best ways to fulfill this requirement are:
A power point or similar
A bullet-pointed outline or set of flash cards
An abbreviated copy of your essay, about 4 pages long
Power Point or Slides
Power Point or Slides presentation that summarizes the key points of your research paper. This should include:A title slide introducing yourself and your topic
3 to 5 slides summarizing the sources you included in your research paper and reporting their most important pointsStart with 1 slide per source. If you can condense this down by grouping like sources together, feel free to do so
3 to 5 slides detailing your argument. These slides should refer back to your research as needed, but should focus on your contribution to the discussion
Include the most important information in bullet points and short paragraphs. Remember that if you were presenting this in person, you’d be using it as a visible source of notes to speak from.
Use pictures and graphics to make your slides visually appealing
Use the templates provided to help you structure your slides
Don’t just copy and paste huge portions of your essay into your presentation. Information on your slides should be concise and visually easy to read.
Outlined Notes or Flash Cards
These notes or cards should summarize the key points and arguments of your essayYou should have 3 to 5 cards summarizing your sources
You should have 3 to 5 cards summarizing your argument
They should have the most important talking points on these cards
Abbreviated Paper
It takes about 2 minutes to read a properly formatted page of MLA text, meaning you’ll want to have about 4 to 5 pages of contentDon’t try and read the whole paper in 10 mintues
Instead, trim your content down to focus on the most important parts of your essaythis might mean cutting each paragraph in half, cutting out several paragraphs entirely, or both.
