Hospital mergers have been an ongoing phenomenon since the mid 1990s. Hospitals also have alliances. Locally Tidelands Health is aligned with Medical University of South Carolina. Conway Medical Center has an affiliation with Duke for cardiac services and recently had a 30% share of its ownership controlled by Novant, a North Carolina based system. Grand Strand is a member of Hospital Corporation of America, a for profit, stockholder held company which comprises 180 hospitals across the US. McLeod is a Florence based system, that has bought up small rural hospital across the Pee Dee region and in the Grand Strand and is building a new hospital at the north end of Carolina Forest
Find an alliance or merger of hospitals and highlight the laws involved in the merger such as Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act or the Certificate of Public Advantage law (state). Discuss the population service area, geography, competitors and reasons for the merger.
