Notably, African American families are twice as likely as their white counterparts to request aggressive life-sustaining treatments. There is a perception among African Americans that advance directives and palliative care imply ‘giving up hope’ or are inconsistent with their cultural and personal values. Some individuals may harbor concerns that hospice or palliative care is recommended to limit treatment or as a way of ‘getting rid of them,’ rather than serving as a means to enhance control or self-determination.
