describe the
historical roots or precedents of that problem from a sociological perspective, and then identify some
possible solutions or directions for progress regarding the issue. You should use scholarly, peer-
reviewed sources to describe the background of your topic, as well as ways that scholars and
researchers have approached the topic. However, because you’ll be writing about current events, it is
acceptable to use non-scholarly sources to both describe your topic and talk about some potential
solutions as well (e.g., news coverage of a protest, TikToks about student loans, etc.). A rough outline
that may be useful (but certainly not necessary to follow) might look like:
A. Introduction of current issue
B. Historical roots of issue
C. How sociologists have examined and addressed the issue
D. Potential solutions or things to think about that other people haven’t addressed yet (including
possible tweaks to previously-tried solutions)
Other guidelines your paper should follow:
• Cite at least 5 scholarly sources (i.e., journal articles) that have not been assigned in class, and at
least 8 sources overall.
• Use ASA style citations and formatting, and appropriately cite all your sources (whether directly
quoting or paraphrasing).
• Your paper should be double-spaced, and written in Times New Roman size 12.
• This paper should be written in a formal, academic tone, and abide by the conventions of
scholarly writing. This includes carefully proofreading your paper for grammatical and spelling
errors, clarity and conciseness in your writing, and a clear overall organizational logic.
• You should have clear introductory and conclusion paragraphs, and each paragraph should have
a focused topic.
