Clinical Issue of Interest: Pressure Ulcers My clinical issue of interest is pressure ulcers and how to prevent and reduce their occurrence in patients in skilled or long-term care nursing facilities. The PICO question I am presenting is: In the elderly population, does the use of a digital skin and wound management system or application by staff reduce the occurrence or frequency of pressure ulcers when in a skilled or long-term care facility? This PICO question will allow me to focus my search and assist in developing my research skills to find the best available evidence to reduce or prevent pressure ulcers (Research Guides at California State University, n.d.). Search Results and Strategies Unrelieved pressure on the skin can cause pressure ulcers (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). Pressure ulcers are also known as bed sores, decubitus ulcers, and pressure sores. In the United States, pressure injury prevalence is 11.6% (Sugathapala et al., 2023). Pressure ulcers that occur while in a nursing home are 8.5%. Most pressure injuries that occur in nursing home residents are Stages 1 and 2 and are usually located on the heel, foot, or sacrum (Sugathapala et al., 2023). More than 1 in 10 nursing residents have a pressure ulcer (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). When I began my search, I first went to the Walden University Library Page. As instructed after watching one of the videos posted in the announcements last week, I clicked on the Research by Subject blue tab in the upper left corner. I then clicked on Nursing to help narrow my search down to only Nursing Articles. A new box labeled “Start my Nursing Research, came up. In this box, I input pressure ulcers. It then transferred me to EBSCO where it rendered 45,194 articles. Once there, I added a second search keyword, Research Study, to help narrow it down to only those types of articles. It knocked the results down to 565. I then input in the third search bar, reduce or decrease or minimize or prevent, to find items that used any of these words listed and it narrowed it down even further to just 122 articles (Walden University, n.d.-f). On the left blue side of the screen, I was able to increase the rigor and effectiveness of my search by narrowing it down even more. I refined my results by checking ‘Peer Reviewed Scholarly Journals Only’, and it was narrowed down to 111, and then filtered it down even further to articles only in the last 5 years, from 2018-2023, which narrowed it down to 46 articles!
