The purpose of this academic paper is to provide students with an opportunity to explore a childbearing or pediatric topic of interest, take a position, and discuss the implications for nursing practice.
This assignment relates to the following N 301 Outcomes:
Analyze physiological and psychosocial health concepts related to nursing care during pregnancy and childhood.
Analyze the impact of the environment on childbearing families and children.
Explore alterations in family processes during perinatal period and childhood illness. This is an academic paper and, as such, it will be important to include the following:
Title page (use your student number only, NO names)
Introduction (includes a thesis statement)
Body (includes definitions, statement of position, compare and contrast, andimplications)
Conclusion (summarizes key points and offers a concluding statement)Format as per APA 7th edition.Guidelines
Choose a topic related to Pediatrics or Childbearing Families that interests you (e.g., how to support single parent families during childhood illness; how nurses support families undergoing cancer treatment or other chronic illnesses; safety issues in the community; impact of surgery on families; poverty; long term effects of 3rd and 4th degree perineal tears; how to support women on SSRIs in the postpartum period; breastfeeding support when language barriers exist) and look for articles related to this topic (more under #6).
Choose one of the following concepts to inform your topic and define clearly:  Social determinants of health (SDOH) (Choose and define 1-3)
 Culture
 Gender diversity Health equity
 Spirituality
 Diversity in language  Family centered care  Trauma informed care
Define your topic and concept. Ensure your readers know exactly what you are talking about. Your concept will be pulled through the compare and contrast and implications
sections so make sure you provide a clear definition and description of both. You may send in your topic, concept, and thesis statement for approval and feedback. See below for further details (Part One).
Introduction: When writing your introduction (this can be done later), your topic, the purpose of the paper and a general outline of your paper should be presented. We suggest revisiting your introduction after your paper is written to ensure clarity of thought and terms.
Statement of Position. Your statement of position is a strong personal statement that demonstrates that your topic is important and requires the attention of your target audience. First, identify a challenge, concern or problem within your topic and chosen concept. Then decide who needs to know about this. Which professional nursing audience will benefit the most from the information you will share? This is your target audience for your paper. What is your goal for your target audience? Do you aim to be informative, challenging, controversial, or advocate?Examples:
Pediatric nurses must advocate for adolescents with chronic renal disease to ensure that they receive the services and support they need to successfully manage their disease.Nurses working with childbearing families must understand the impact of the use of SSRI’s in the postpartum period in order to promote attachment and confident parenting in the first six weeks of life.*Your thesis statement differs from your statement of position. A thesis statement gives a general outline of the direction of your paper whereas the statement of position is a personal statement on why you think your topic is important*
Compare and contrast the themes identified in the literature. Utilize at minimum 3 – 5 current, relevant, scholarly, peer reviewed journal articles that speak to your topic. Editorials, commentaries, opinion pieces, and newspaper articles are not scholarly articles. If there is a paucity of Canadian research, note this in your paper and explain. You may reference your textbook and class articles, but these do not count as the required journal articles. One literature review article is acceptable. To successfully complete this section, look for common themes and decide where the literature agrees and disagrees. How and why do they agree or disagree? Is there anything missing that you think should be included? Don`t report on what each article concludes. For example: These articles agree that….. (Apple, 2022; Smith, 2021). However, this article made the points x, y, & z (Jones, 2022). We highly recommend you use headings for each theme.
Discuss any implications for nursing. You will not be able to determine your implications until your articles are chosen and themed. The implications must connect to your themes. However, you can include original thoughts about the implications based on themes you’ve identified. We highly recommend you use headings for each implication. You must also discuss any barriers to nursing here. Barriers are any difficulties you anticipate in the implementation of your implications. Consider: Why would this discussion be important for nursing? What do nurses need to do about this? What should nurses be thinking about/researching/implementing into their practice?
Conclude with a summary of key points and a concluding statement. Don’t skip this. Briefly summarize your main points. Echo what you have written in your introduction and thesis statement (no new information).
The marking rubric is available to you. Use this!!
