Assignment
Write a paper offering your interpretation and analysis of Anne Bradstreet’s poetry and life using both readings from the textbook and from Gordon’s biography. You may incorporate peer-reviewed articles from the Alabama Virtual Library databases, as well.
The paper should be as long as it needs to be to achieve your purpose, which is to support and develop the analysis you offer. Support and development takes the form of examples and quotes from the relevant texts.
Things to Consider
If you’ve never written a literary analysis before, or if you simply feel stuck when starting out on the paper, consider the following:
You should offer analysis of her poems; root this analysis in specific evidence from her poems; focus on themes, poetic devices Links to an external site.(rhyme, for instance)
Your analysis of her poems should reflect an understanding of her life and times, as rooted in Gordon’s biography, so you should include evidence from Gordon’s book, as well as careful analysis.
In addition to examining her poetry and her life and times, you should develop a position on her influence on American literature and history rooted, again, in a close reading of her poems and Gordon’s biography. An examination of her place in literature and history could, of course, involve incorporating other readings and material from the course that we have already covered. In addition, you are welcome to do research in the academic databases in Alabama Virtual Library.
