The project is a substantial assignment that will take a good amount of time and effort. Accordingly, it is worth significantly more than the other assignments so far. Take your time and be sure to review the rubric to make sure you earn all possible points.
Pick a park or preserve that is most interesting to you from the list below.
El Yunque National Forest (Puerto Rico)
Big Bend National park/BigBend Ranch State Park/Parque National Canon de Santa Elena/Area Natural Protegida Maderas del Carmen (Texas/Mexico)
Doñana National Park (Spain)
Duaringa State forest (Australia)
Phu Pha Yol National Park (Thailand)
Balai Taman Nasional Bantimurung Bulusaraung (Indonesia)
Hakusan National Park (Japan)
Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio (Costa Rica)
Utria National Park (Colombia)
Iberá Park (Argentina)
Part 1
Explore the following items for your chosen park or preserve:
Look at the shape and physical characteristics of the park/preserve.
Explore the areas around the highlighted park/preserve in Google maps.
Using the Internet, explore the official website for the park/preserve and other websites.
Discover what are the main goals of the parks in terms of recreation, resources, and preserving biodiversity or habitat.
Analyze what makes this a good or poor park/preserve design and/or what can be done to improve it.
In a Word document, answer the following questions to detail what in particular about the park/preserve interests you.
What is the primary focus/purpose/goal for this park (eg., particular habitat/animals)?
What aspects of good park design/characteristics are seen?
What aspects of the park design/characteristics can be improved?
What geological features and biological features can be found at this park?
Does the park have any listed conservation efforts, restoration plans, or initiatives?
What interests you most about this park?
Part 2
In your Word document, complete the following three sections. This is 40% of the grade for this assignment, so make sure that it is comprehensive. I should be able to base a two-week trip on this document.
Section 1: Provide an estimate of cost for you to visit that park (so you can start long-term planning!); be sure to include things like airfare, food cost per day, hotels, and in-county transportation such as rental car, ferries, trains, bus.
Section 2: Include a simple itinerary of things to do at the park/preserve. For example, you may list trails, visitor centers, geological features (like a waterfall/canyon/hot springs), and/or biological feature (such as a habitat/animal/plant) in the park.
Section 3: Include what things of interest are in the area around the park (other parks, museums, culture attractions, or anything that interests you). Be sure to include images and links in your document. (I want to see what cool places to stay and explore that you found!)
