Students will research a specific disability, diagnosis or condition and find inclusion strategies to support such, then prepare a presentation. You may prepare a Power Point or Prezi presentation or video your presentation. The list of possibilities is endless and you may have to drill down as some of these conditions have several forms. Those of you in the SLP program, please choose something other than speech or language. The report will include the following information:
A clear definition of the disability (may include rate of occurrence, the cause(s), how it affects life expectancy, related medical conditions, etc.)
A description of how the disability manifests itself (characteristics or traits seen, behavioral, cognitive, physical, and social characteristics)
Current research available for the condition/disability, prognosis, treatment possibilities
Recommendations for those working with children with disability in educational or recreational settings- what should be done to best support a child’s success if he/she has such a condition (you may want to include slides for various aspects such as indoor/outdoor environmental consideration, schedule, equipment needs, learning materials selection/adaptation, adult role, interactions, safety, accommodations, etc.)
Other information that student believes is necessary to include
Bibliography (2-3 sources)
Sources used for this report should be included in a bibliography and proper references, citations, made. In addition, students should plan to share key learnings regarding inclusion strategies in a discussion which will be shared with a small group of other students in class.
