Prompt:
The introductory chapters in the text Family Therapy pushes a few boundaries and challenges some of our preconceived notions and ideology. One-on-one individual therapy processes and structures are being challenged and the exploration of systems thinking, and systems theory are being introduced. Constructs such as homeostasis, cybernetics, family roles, the perceived hero, family patterns, first-order change, second-order change, hidden messages, meta-communication, paradox and counter paradox, constructivism, reframing, and much more are defined in detail to help us understand the foundation of systems thinking. Each of these concepts are fascinating and as you begin to integrate the ideas you will start to develop a pattern of thinking that will allow for you to identify dysfunctional or functional interactional patterns of behavior. In your asynchronous discussion groups, explore these ideas by offering your understanding of at least five of these constructs. As you record your initial and subsequent videos to participate in the group discussion is important that you are not simply reading the information found in the text or websites that speak to these family system constructs. You should demonstrate your understanding of the constructs you have selected by offering a definition in your own words and an illustration to help us visualize the constructs through your lens. As part of your response, share with us how these concepts interrelate to help therapists better understand the challenges presented by their clients. Please support your responses by referencing and citing (since you will be recording, be sure to verbalize your references) information from the text and any other source utilized for this response.
