The core competencies of an IPCP include values and ethics, roles and responsibilities, interprofessional communication and teamwork, and team-based care. When it comes to values and ethics, they are based on the goal of providing patient-centered care. Being respectful and honest, having standards of ethics, and more. For roles and responsibilities, The University of Texas states, “Understand the roles and responsibilities of the different health care professionals on the team in providing safe, efficient, and effective patient-centered health care that optimizes outcomes” (The University of Texas, n.d.). The third IPCP is interprofessional communication. Essentially, this is how you communicate with patients and their families. This is where you need to ensure you are being respectful and getting your information across to them. Communication is essential in anything we do; a part is listening. Listen to what your patients tell you and go from there. The last IPCP is teamwork and team-based care. In healthcare, building relationships with your patients and team members is essential. When working with people, it is crucial to implement team dynamics and identify how you will deal with conflicts.
In my professional experience, two of the competencies that come to mind are teamwork and team-based care, as well as values and ethics. I work with a team who are always willing to help each other. I see other departments buried in work because their team needs to help them. This is why our department numbers are also in the green, and we encourage each other to improve. Having a good team is beneficial not just for you but also for your patients. For values and ethics, I have seen too many times when employees talk badly about patients and do not respect them. Unfortunately, this happens often. My mantra in life is to treat others how you want to be treated. I go to work every day and be the best and kindest person I can be.
