PASSAGE Deuteronomy 17:14-20
Using all five journals, you can now complete your final paper. The paper should be a minimum of five pages (not counting title page or bibliography), but no longer than eight pages.
Start by identifying your passage (do not include the passage itself – the reference is fine). Include your outline from journal 1 and indicate any overall themes with the passage. Within your paper, I will be looking for you to address several of the following questions that are especially applicable to your passage. All of this has been included in your journal assignments. If you did the journals well, you should be able to link the sections together and add your own thoughts.
1)What do reputable scholars say about the theme and/or significance of the passage?
2)How does the historical setting add to the meaning of the passage? (The setting is the time period that the events of your passage took place.)
3) What do reputable scholars say about the composition history? How, when, and by whom was the text created, edited, or transmitted? How do those things affect our understanding of your passage?
4) What does the text mean today, as it is applied in contemporary situations? Find application for your life if possible. (i.e. How does the passage address modern audiences? To what contemporary situations can your passage be applied? How can the passage be applied to those situations? How does the passage affect you personally?)
This paper should be a coherent essay with an introduction containing a thesis statement, a body with several well-written paragraphs, and a conclusion. Grammar and spelling will be scrutinized closely, so write well, proofread, and have your friends proofread. Document your sources using the formats I have asked you to use in these journals throughout the semester. If you need help writing, please make an appointment with the Writing Center well before the due date!
