Lesson 1.5 Physical and Chemical Change Lab
In this lab, you will investigate
physical and chemical changes
by doing different activities
involving
a
wide
variety of substances.
Safety

Do not eat or drink any of the substances produced in this lab.

Make sure you have a parent supervisor for activities that involve using fire
.

Make sure you have access to materials that can clean up a mess
.

Wear safety goggles and gloves when performing
these activities.
Materials

A wide variety of household items
(see activity list)

A cell phone or device capable of taking photos
Procedure
1.
Perform
15
of the
20
activities identified on
the list provided later in this l
ab.
The choice
of which activities t
o perform should be based on what is accessible to you
in your home
or school.
2.
Record observations for each change as you complete the activities.
A table has been
provided for this, but you can make your own if you
want.
Take images before and after
you do each activity using a cell phone
.
3.
Classify each change as
either a
physical or chemical change
or both
(
physical and
chemical
)
.
Classify each of
the activities a
s
reversible or not.
A table has been provided
for this
, but you can make your own if you want
.
4.
For
3
of the
activities you identified as physical changes,
include the
images of before
and after
the change
in your lab report
observations
.
You should also explain WHY you
classified these changes as physical changes.
5.
For 3 of the activities you identified as chemical changes,
include the
images of before
and after
the change
in your lab report
observations
.
You should also explain WHY you
classified these changes as chemical changes.
6.
Complete a lab report
that includes
introductory information, a
purpose,
materials (based
on the activities you selected), procedures,
data/
observations
(fill in the tables),
re
sults
(
Steps 4 and 5 of the procedure
)
and a conclusion
.
You do not need a
hypothesis,
calculations
or sources of error for this report.
See the assessment guide at the end of
this lab.

Assessment
(
4
0 marks)
Make sure to refer to the Creating a Lab Report Guide
for other assistance with what is
needed in a lab report
. This will be marked using a marking guide online.
Introductory Info,
Purpose, Materials and Procedure
(5 marks)
Did you include all your introductory information?
Observations
and Data
(
15
marks)
Did you complete the entire table correctly
and record
all
your observations
for the
activities you selected
?
Results and Discussion (
12
marks)
Pay special attention to
what
you
need
to include
for
Steps 4 and 5
in the procedure.
Conclusion
(
8
marks)
Did you notice any patterns in the data? What can you conclude about
physical and
chemical changes based on th
e data you collected in this lab? Make sure to be specific about
examples.
Remember to note why you decided certain changes were either physical or chemical
(check your notes!).
