In this forum, we examine Neanderthals and their similarity to our own species by means of the following hypothetical scenario:
Imagine that Neanderthals did not go extinct 30,000 years ago. Instead, they survived as a distinctive population, and today they occupy the planet alongside our own species–modern Homo sapiens. Based on what you have learned in the course this week about Neanderthals, including, but not limited to anatomy, genetics, behavior, and material culture, what status would they occupy in our society? Would they be fully integrated into our society, or would they be seen as less than fully human? Below are a few examples of areas you could address in your posts (you don’t need to cover them all, but can select a few).
Physical appearance –How physically distinctive would they bel? If they wore the same clothes as us, would we be able to tell them apart?
Behavior–how different is their cognition and how would it affect their social status? Are they less intelligent or creative than us? What about language abilities?
Would they perform the same jobs as us, or would there be occupational segregation?
Genetic similarities/differences and degree of interbreeding between the two groups and how this might structure social relations.
Consider potential Neanderthal/modern human relations in the context of some darker elements of human history–racism, warfare, slavery, colonialism, etc.
Recall the first discussion about what it means to be human. Do you think Neanderthals would fit into your criteria of “humanness”?
I would encourage you to be creative and have fun with this discussion! Since this is speculation, there is really no one “correct” answer. However, you should support your assertions with evidence from the readings. You do not need to cite specific sources or page numbers, but you should make appropriate connections with relevant scientific data on fossils, artifacts, genetics, etc.
Please post your response (10 points), and two thoughtful responses to other students (5 points each).
