For the argumentative essay, you will formulate an argument based on any area of interest you would like. I will assist you with that topic in order to narrow it down. It needs to be about something you’re interested in but not something you’ve written about for a class before. No matter what topic it is, we can formulate it into a good idea for a paper. Once we narrow it down, you will come up with a position/argument on the subject. To articulate a strong position, you will focus on including comprehensive background information, convincing evidence, and counterarguments to reinforce your claim. You will remember the rhetorical situation (so the purpose and your audience and remembering tone and pathos) when you write this paper. You will have at least 3 sources on this paper and one of those MUST be an academic source. You will use research, and probably some summary, quotation and paraphrasing skills to develop your argument. You will also use critical thinking to have a strong, specific thesis statement and body paragraphs that support it.
Your argument needs to be something that you believe in, despite the fact that you won’t be using first person. In your paper, you will present your argument in a balanced way.
What I will be looking for:
I will be looking for a concise thesis that makes a clear argument and has a narrow focus on the topic that will be covered by the paper. I want a strong introduction that leads into the thesis. There should be follow up paragraphs in the body of the paper that supports the thesis statement. Make sure you have a tightly focused topic, accurate, well-researched information, synthesis of ideas and various writing strategies (outlined in your Norton).
Format: Typed, double-spaced, 12-pt Times New Roman font, standard 1” or 1.25” margins. Use MLA format. Always consult Hacker manual when you have formatting or style questions. Please staple the paper when finished.
